Wanderlei Silva`s significant health worries, voiced a year prior, have gained renewed attention following the disastrous conclusion of his recent fighting return.
Silva`s highly anticipated return to the ring after a seven-year hiatus did not unfold as hoped. The iconic Pride and UFC figure controversially stepped back into competition at 49, his last official fight being Bellator 206 in 2018.
His previous stint saw him endure a challenging period, culminating in a knockout loss to ‘Rampage’ Jackson, which many believed marked the end of his career. This defeat was part of a troubling record of nine losses in 13 fights, several of which were devastating KOs.
These past experiences seemingly led ‘The Axe Murderer’ to face serious health issues commonly associated with a prolonged fighting career. Yet, despite these potential risks, Silva’s comeback was permitted, tragically ending in a violent fashion.
Wanderlei Silva`s Disclosure of Severe Health Issues in UFC Antitrust Settlement Letter
Wanderlei Silva made his return at Spaten Fight Night 2 on September 27, engaging in an exhibition match against Acelino Freitas, a former two-division Brazilian boxing champion. This event followed a previous exhibition where fellow UFC legends Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen fought to a draw last year.
Unlike the somewhat subdued affair between Silva and Sonnen, the recent event concluded with explosive drama. Following controversial tactics, including repeated head-butts, Silva was disqualified. This sparked a furious ring invasion by both teams, escalating into a full-scale brawl that involved former UFC champion Fabricio Werdum.
During the chaotic melee, Silva suffered a brutal knockout at the hands of an unidentified individual in a tuxedo. The disturbing sight of the Brazilian fighter’s unconscious body being dragged from the fracas has brought his worrying statements from 2024 back into public discussion.
In a letter supporting the UFC antitrust settlement, Silva candidly disclosed his profound health concerns, including symptoms suggestive of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). He penned:
“I am apprehensive that my career has inflicted a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and I am now experiencing symptoms consistent with TBI and CTE, such as depression, mood swings, and heightened irritability.”
“I also grapple with sleep apnea, leading to difficulties with sleep and breathing. To my recollection, I have undergone four nasal surgeries, one facial surgery, two on my left knee, one on my right knee, and another on my elbow.”
While Silva later offered a reassuring update from the hospital after the Saturday event, this news is unlikely to quell the widespread concern and frustration over how he was allowed to compete at 49, given his publicly acknowledged health problems.

Dana White`s Past Comments on Wanderlei Silva`s Comeback
Silva`s initial plans for a return were within the Global Fight League, a team-based MMA promotion that attracted several high-profile fighters but ultimately failed to launch a single event before dissolving.
‘The Axe Murderer’ was slated to join a roster that included names like Luke Rockhold, Tyron Woodley, Paige VanZant, Alexander Gustafsson, and Frank Mir.
UFC President Dana White, addressing Silva’s comeback ambitions during a December 2024 press conference, expressed his skepticism with a simple, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
One can assume White, like many others, might now wish he hadn`t had to witness the distressing footage of Silva`s knockout during the Spaten Fight Night brawl.
