Warriors’ Repeated Attempts to Trade for LeBron James from Lakers Revealed

Sports News

The Golden State Warriors have repeatedly contacted the Los Angeles Lakers over the last 18 months to discuss the possibility of acquiring LeBron James in a trade, as reported by Jake Fischer of The Stein Line. Fischer also noted that Stephen Curry and James reportedly thoroughly enjoyed their experience as teammates on the international stage.

The Warriors` interest in James was initially reported around the 2024 trade deadline, when Adrian Wojnarowski indicated that Warriors owner Joe Lacob had reached out to Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. Buss advised Lacob to speak with James` agent, Rich Paul, who unequivocally stated James` desire to remain with the Lakers. Fischer`s report now unveils the Warriors` sustained pursuit of James.

This summer has proven intriguing for James and the Lakers, who are in the midst of transitioning from the James era to a new period focused on a younger superstar, following the signing of a three-year, $165 million extension with a key player on August 2nd.

According to ESPN`s Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne, James was reportedly displeased with how the Lakers managed this transitional phase. They wrote that while James understood the Lakers` strategic pivot to a younger star, sources indicated that “nuance was sometimes lost” during the process from James` perspective.

Prior to this contract extension, James opted into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, choosing this over opting out and signing a multi-year deal with the club in free agency. James` decision to commit for only one more season, coupled with an `eyebrow-raising` statement from Rich Paul, fueled widespread speculation about “The King`s” future – both with the Lakers and in the NBA. In fact, such speculation was so rampant that Sam Quinn ranked every team`s chances of trading for James, with the Warriors notably placing third on his list.

However, Rich Paul somewhat dampened the possibility of a James trade in late July during an appearance on `The TylilShow Live.` Paul declared:

“The man has a no-trade clause. End of story. He has a no-trade clause. It`s up to him. He has a no-trade clause. So, in the event when a player has a no-trade clause and a team wants to trade that player, that player has the ability to say no. That`s in his contract.”

While a trade for James is unlikely this season, it is evident that the Warriors have not abandoned their hope of bringing the league`s all-time leading scorer to the Bay Area. Perhaps the true drama surrounding James` future will commence next summer when he is set to become a free agent.
