WATCH: Josh Hart Ejected and Injured During Knicks Preseason Game vs. 76ers

NBA News

The New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers recently commenced their NBA preseason schedule with a pair of games held in Abu Dhabi, a testament to the league`s continuous efforts to expand its global footprint. Both teams are considered strong contenders for a deep playoff run, potentially even reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, assuming their key players remain healthy. However, player health has been a recurring concern for both franchises in recent years, and Thursday`s game unfortunately proved to be no different.

During the early moments of the second quarter, Knicks guard Josh Hart experienced a disconcerting incident, sustaining an injury and subsequently being ejected from the game. The play unfolded when Hart secured a rebound following a missed three-pointer by Sixers rookie Johni Broome. Hart then fell to the court, and a jump ball was initiated after Kennedy Chandler of the Sixers tied up the ball with him. As the referee signaled for the jump ball, Hart, visibly in pain and frustration, tossed the ball across the court. This action was swiftly met with a technical foul and an immediate ejection, as it appeared he had tweaked his back during the scramble for the rebound.

The situation left many observers perplexed, as Hart`s action of throwing the ball seemed to be an involuntary reaction to his pain, possibly an attempt to create distance from Chandler. Nevertheless, the official evidently interpreted his conduct differently. Hart limped off the court and made his way to the locker room for an immediate evaluation of his injury.

Following the Knicks` 99-84 loss, head coach Mike Brown provided an update, stating that Hart was experiencing lower back soreness and would be monitored day-to-day, with his status for Saturday`s game uncertain. “I didn`t see him go down, I just saw him down and he looked like he was in considerable pain,” Brown remarked. “But he`s day-to-day and we`ll see how he feels tomorrow.”

Sixers coach Nick Nurse, who had a clear view of the incident from his team`s bench, initially expressed significant concern. “I thought something really bad happened,” Nurse commented. “He wasn`t in a collision, it was on his own I think, those always are scary. He was in a lot of pain. I don`t know what the verdict was. Let`s hope it`s not serious, but I did think it was something very serious at the beginning. I was trying to get everybody`s attention, like, `Let`s go, get out here.` And let`s hope he`s okay.”

Based on Coach Brown`s comments, the injury does not appear to be severe, which offers a significant sigh of relief for the Knicks organization. Hart is often regarded as the “heart” of the team, particularly for his relentless defensive effort and willingness to put his body on the line, a characteristic vividly demonstrated by this play. He is already scheduled to wear a splint this season due to a finger injury that required surgery over the summer. While adding a back issue to his list of ailments is far from ideal so early in the season, it seems unlikely to sideline him for an extended period.
